Exams can be a stressful time for students, but as a parent, you have the power to make them a little less overwhelming. In this newsletter we are going to show you some simple but effective ways to do just that.
Create the calm 🌱🧘♂️
One of the most effective ways to do this is by creating a conducive study environment at home. This could mean setting up a quiet, clutter-free study space where distractions are minimised. Making this a no mobile phone area is also a must.
You should also ensure that during the family routine there are quiet times in the house where other family members are also quiet to ensure those revising can engage fully. Planning ahead is key.
You are what you eat 🍏🥦
Ensure your child is eating a balanced diet and getting enough sleep - these are fundamental to their physical and mental health, especially during stressful periods. These two factors play a pivotal role in their overall well-being, especially during times of stress.
A well-balanced diet consists of a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. It is also important to limit their intake of processed and sugary foods, as they can be detrimental to their health in the long run.
Sleep is key 😴
Furthermore, getting enough sleep is equally important for our children's well-being. In today's fast-paced world, it can be easy for kids to get caught up in their busy schedules and sacrifice proper rest. However, lack of sleep can have a negative impact on their physical and mental health. It can lead to a weakened immune system, increased irritability, and difficulty concentrating.
As parents, it is our duty to establish a bedtime routine and ensure that our children are getting the recommended amount of sleep for their age. This may require setting limits on screen time and creating a calm and comfortable sleep environment. We understand that it can be challenging to maintain a balanced diet and sleep routine for our children, especially during times of stress.
It is not all work and no play 🎮⚽
However, it is crucial to prioritise these fundamental aspects of their health. And don't forget to encourage regular breaks from studying. All work and no play can lead to burnout. When we work with our students to prepare them for exams we create a revision timetable. The first thing we do is ask students to schedule in their down time and sports as exercise helps manage stress and anxiety. This way we help them see they have enough free time and that there is a balance between work and play.
Just as important as creating a comfortable physical environment is providing emotional support. Talk to your child about their exams and any fears they might have. Let them know it's okay to feel nervous, and that you're there to support them no matter what.
