As the GCSE courses get underway for the academic year, parents often find themselves searching for ways to help their children stay focused, motivated, and organised. One of the most effective ways to support your child is by helping them develop strong study skills. In our latest interview on the National Tutors YouTube channel, we sat down with Lucy, one of our talented English and Art tutors, to discuss study strategies and how students can manage themselves for academic success.

Why Study Skills Matter

Study skills go beyond simple revision techniques—they're about managing time, setting realistic goals, and maintaining a healthy mindset. As Lucy points out in the interview, mastering self-management is critical for students preparing for exams. Without the right study skills, even the brightest students can feel overwhelmed by the workload.

When students are equipped with proper study habits, they:

- Stay organised: They know what to study and when, reducing the chaos of last-minute cramming.

- Feel more confident: Understanding how to break down tasks gives students a sense of control.

- Reduce stress: Efficient study methods help prevent burnout and anxiety.

These skills are something every student can develop, and they play a huge role in improving both academic performance and well-being.

✅ Lucy’s Tips for Managing Studies

During the interview, Lucy shared practical tips to help students stay on track and manage their studies effectively. Here are a few of her best recommendations:

# 1. Break Study Time into Chunks

Trying to focus for long periods is tough for most students. Lucy advises parents to encourage their children to break study time into manageable chunks, with regular breaks in between. A popular method is the Pomodoro Technique, where students work for 25 minutes and then take a 5-minute break.

# 2. Create a Study Schedule

A well-planned schedule can be a lifesaver. Help your child set up a study timetable that allocates time for each subject, along with regular review sessions. This not only ensures balanced revision but also helps avoid last-minute panic.

# 3. Set Realistic Goals

Encouraging your child to set achievable goals for each study session keeps them motivated and focused. Whether it's mastering a math concept or memorising key quotes for English Literature, realistic goals ensure consistent progress.

# 4. Encourage Self-Care

As Lucy emphasises in the video, self-care is an essential part of studying. Ensure your child is well-rested, hydrated, and fueled with nutritious snacks to maintain focus. Studying in short bursts while staying comfortable can make a big difference.

🏠How You Can Help at Home

As a parent, your role in helping your child develop these habits is invaluable. Here are some ways you can support your child as they prepare for their exams:

- Create a calm, distraction-free environment: A quiet and organised study space is crucial for focus.

- Monitor their breaks: Make sure they are stepping away from their desk, stretching, and getting fresh air to avoid burnout.

- Praise their efforts: Positive reinforcement is key to building confidence. Celebrate small wins along the way.

- Use resources like flashcards: Help your child by creating flashcards for key terms, quotes, or equations they need to memorise.

Self marking is so important to learn what the examiner wants so this is why a lot of our assessments are self- marked and you've always got [tutors] to fall back on if you're not sure.
